Unpacking instructions
Decontaminate exterior of shipping container
- It is recommended that you consult your Animal Health Department or veterinarian for locations and methods specific to your facility. The area in which you decontaminate the container is specific to your facility and barrier entry procedures. The container should be decontaminated after it has been exposed to any potential source of contamination. You may want to decontaminate the container more than once. Assume that during transport the container has been exposed to contaminants. As the shipping container moves through your facility prior to unpacking it may again be exposed to contaminants that you do not want in your animal facility.
- Use a disinfectant or sporicide as recommended and approved by your Animal Health and Safety departments.
- Wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the type of disinfectant or sporicide used. Again it is imperative to consult the product manufacturer and your Safety Department to assure that proper PPE is used.
- Spray or wipe all exterior surfaces of the container with disinfectant or sporicide.
Unpacking within a hood
- Disinfect the hood prior to introducing the shipping container and between shipping containers. In some cases, you may also want to decontaminate the shipping container prior to introduction to the hood.
- Use strict aseptic technique when handling of the cages, components, shipping containers and animals (i.e. disinfect forceps, wear gloves/mask, etc.).
- Break the lid perimeter security seal at the perforations.
- Insert thumb into the finger well located in the front center and pull firmly to open.
- Do not attempt to remove entire top of the container. Open the hinged lid only.
