C57BL/6J Chr#PWD/Ph/ForeJ Consomic Strain Panel Available from The Jackson Laboratory

JAX® NOTES Issue 503, Fall 2006

Selected strains from a new consomic strain (CS) panel are now available for use by the scientific community. The C57BL/6J-Chr #PWD/Ph/ForeJ panel contains 28 strains in which chromosomes and mitochondrial DNA from the PWD/Ph inbred pure Mus musculus musculus strain were backcrossed into the C57BL/6J (B6, 000664) genetic background by Jiri Forejt, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. PWD/PhJ (PWD, 004660), a strain closely related to the PWD/Ph progenitor strain, is also available from The Jackson Laboratory. This set together with the currently available C57BL/6J-Chr#A/NaJ set (004379 to 004399 ; progenitors A/J (A) and B6) will provide considerable diversity: An SNP haplotype analysis by Dr. Beverly Paigen of The Jackson Laboratory (pers. comm.) indicated that B6 differs from either A or PWD at 98% of the mouse genome, and preliminary characterizations (Fernandes et al. 2004) and the Mouse Phenome Database indicate that many phenotypes (including behavioral) differ between B6 and PWD. This new resource will be a powerful tool for locating the QTLs and underlying genes associated with a wide range of important human diseases, as well as for the molecular dissection of behavior. For more information or to order strains from this CS panel, please see the JAX® Mice Database.
