The Jackson Laboratory's Center for New Mouse Models of Heart, Lung, Blood, and Sleep Disorders

The Jackson Laboratory's Center for New Mouse Models of Heart, Lung, Blood, and Sleep (HLBS) Disorders is one of five Programs for Genomic Applications (PGAs) established in September, 2000, by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to advance functional genomic research.

NON/LtJ Males: a New Model of Diet-induced Diabesity

Mouse models are extremely useful for researching obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, the constellation of phenotypes associated with metabolic syndrome (Fong 2004; Isomaa et al. 2001).

New Inducible Models of Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia in the elderly. It is characterized by β-amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and synaptic and neuronal cell loss.

Cause of Glucose Intolerance in C57BL/6J Mice Discovered

By performing QTL analysis in an intercross between the C57BL/6J (B6) strain, a widely used model of diet-induced diabetes, and the C3H/HeJ strain, researchers from the United Kingdom recently found strong evidence that a spontaneous in-frame five-exon deletion in the nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase (Nnt) gene is partly responsible for glucose intolerance and reduced insulin secretion in B6 mice. B6 mice transgenic for the entire Nnt gene had normal phenotypes.

C57BL/6J Chr#PWD/Ph/ForeJ Consomic Strain Panel Available from The Jackson Laboratory

Selected strains from a new consomic strain (CS) panel are now available for use by the scientific community.

"Sticky" Mice Lead to Discovery of New Cause of Neurodegenerative Disease

Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator Dr. Susan L. Ackerman and her colleagues at The Jackson Laboratory, and collaborators at The Scripps Research Institute, recently discovered a novel mechanism responsible for the accumulation of a toxic sludge of misfolded proteins that kills neurons. Such sludge build-ups are characteristic of Alzheimer's and Huntington's diseases.

Querying for Cre-lox and FLP-FRT Strains Improved

To facilitate searching for Cre-lox and FLP-FRT strains using the Quick Query or the Advanced Search Query Forms of the JAX® Mice Database, the Research Area pull-down menus have been redesigned.

Mouse, Human and Rat Transcript and Protein Sequences Available from MGI

Mouse Genome Informatics (MGI) has made several improvements to its Mammalian Orthology Query Results reports.

"Coat Colors of Mice" Book Online

The Mouse Genome Informatics group has adapted the book "The Coat Colors of Mice: a Model for Mammalian Gene Action and Interaction," by Willys K. Silvers (originally published by Springer Verlag in 1979) to the Web.
