The NIH Knock Out Mouse Project (KOMP) - Provide Your Input!
JAX® NOTES Issue 505, Spring 2007
The Knockout Mouse Project (KOMP) aims to generate a comprehensive and public resource comprising thousands of mouse embryonic stem cell lines, one for each gene in the mouse genome and containing a null mutation in that gene. To minimize redundancy and maximize genome coverage, KOMP is coordinating its efforts with the European Conditional Mouse Mutagenesis (EUCOMM) and the North American Conditional Mouse Mutagenesis (NorCOMM) projects. The KOMP Data Coordination Center is located at The Jackson Laboratory, under the leadership of Dr. Martin Ringwald.
From the Data Coordination Web site, you can access the initial list of over 4,500 target genes that KOMP will target, and you can discover how this list was developed. Also, you can add genes to this list and help KOMP prioritize the genes to be knocked out by filling out special forms accessible from the Data Coordination Center site or the Mouse Genome Informatics (MGI) Home Page. The MGI Web site provides resources for the KOMP project and for helping you with the gene nomination process. For example, the site lists and updates the following information daily:
- all the published knocked out genes;
- all genes for which knockout mice are available from public repositories; and
- knockouts that have been produced but are not in a public repository (you can nominate these knockouts forpriority repository acquisition by filling out special online forms).
