Sponsored Strain Distribution Service Improved by JAX® Sperm Cryopreservation and Recovery
JAX® NOTES Issue 507, Fall 2007
The JAX® Services Sponsored Strain Distribution Program plays an important role in distributing unique mouse strains, saving you time, space, and money, and fulfilling the NIH requirement for sharing model organisms with the biomedical research community. This valuable service allows you to spend more time focusing on your research instead of breeding mice and distributing them to colleagues. The Program was recently improved with the addition of our innovative and proven JAX® Sperm Cryopreservation and Recovery techniques (JAX® NOTES 2006). This enhanced program offers the following benefits:
- The strain is rederived, cryopreserved, and a test cryorecovery is performed.
- The strain is assigned a unique stock number and proper genetic nomenclature, allowing it to be traced through time.
- A strain data sheet, including genotypic and phenotypic information, research applications, and references, is published in the publicly-accessible JAX® Mice Database.
- The strain's availability is announced to the biomedical research community, and the strain is distributed through our Repository.
You may receive two pair of the rederived strain from the test recovery for the cost of shipping only.
Requirements for this new service are as follows:
- A functional allele-specific, PCR-based genotype assay for the strain must be provided.
- The strain must be viable and fertile.
- The strain's producer or owner must authorize its submission.
We strongly encourage you to submit strains whose phenotypes and/or development have been published in a peer-reviewed journal.
This combined service is very cost-effective and is applicable to strains (C57BL/6J, FVB/NJ, BALB/cJ, BALB/cByJ, DBA/1J, DBA/2J, C3H/HeJ, or NOD/ShiLtJ, genetic backgrounds) that can be cryopreserved as sperm and recovered and distributed as heterozygotes. For additional cost, the service may be performed with strains of other backgrounds or with strains that should be cryopreserved as homozygous embryos (such as inbred strains or strains with multiple genetic mutations).
