Mouse Phenome Project: Priority Strains List Revised

JAX® NOTES Issue 507, Fall 2007

The Mouse Phenome Project (MPP) Priority Strains has been reviewed and revised based on strain availability, research trends, community input, and new resources, especially the recent release of the NIEHS-Perlegen SNPs for 8.27 million genome-wide locations in a set of inbred strains (Frazer et al. 2007). The strains in the revised MPP list (plus C57BL/6J) will receive top phenotyping priority. Phenotypic data for these strains can now be correlated to the densest SNP dataset available in the world.

The revised MPP list groups 36 strains into three priority tiers (Fig. 1, see pdf document for this figure): tier 1 contains the 16 NIEHS-Perlegen strains; tiers 2 and 3 each contain 10 strains. These strains are well-distributed in the Mouse Family Tree. Strains C57BL/10J, CE/J, I/LnJ, JF1/Ms, NZB/BlNJ, PERA/EiJ, SEA/GnJ, and SPRET/EiJ were dropped from the previous list because they are difficult to breed (and therefore sometimes unavailable), hard to handle, or redundant to other priority strains. Because considerable amounts of phenotypic data already exist for these strains, they will be listed as retired strains and may be used if other strains are not suitable or available. Strains BPL/1J, DDY/JclSidSeyFrkJ, MRL/MpJ, and NZL/LtJ were added to the list to ensure that analyses of MPP strains can be performed with sufficient statistical power. The new strains breed well, are widely used, and/or have unique phenotypes.
