Jackson Laboratory employees support Red Cross relief effort for victims of China earthquakes

JAX® NOTES Issue 511, Fall 2008

In the aftermath of devastating earthquakes that left millions of people in China without food or shelter, a group of Jackson Laboratory employees came together to help, donating nearly $10,000 to the Red Cross relief effort. To raise the money, Ms. Lei Wu, a Laboratory software engineer, organized an innovative and successful fundraiser and then presented a check to the local Pine Tree Chapter of the Red Cross, which will transfer the money to the Red Cross International Disaster Relief Fund.

Ms. Wu and fellow Chinese employees combined an auction, craft sale, and an "Authentic Chinese Takeout Dinner" that served homemade dishes to hundreds of Laboratory employees. "The thing that makes me proud is that this was a group effort," Ms. Wu said. "The Chinese community on Mount Desert Island really came together, and almost every family made food for this event. And so many Lab people helped us with organizing the dinner. I had never served so many people!"

Equally touched was Patrick Adams, Interim Executive Director of the Pine Tree Chapter of the American Red Cross: "We are moved by this gift and pleased to accept it on behalf of the International Disaster Relief Fund. All Red Cross disaster services are provided at no cost to victims, and depend on the generosity of people like the employees of The Jackson Laboratory."
