The Jackson Laboratory—West: New Sacramento facility open for business

JAX® NOTES Issue 513, Spring 2009

Expanded and improved service for West Coast researchers is here. Our brand new facility in Sacramento, Calif., The Jackson Laboratory—West, is now open for business. The new, state-of-the-art facility has five times the mouse production capacity and three times more In Vivo Services capacity than the previous facility in West Sacramento. This expansion has allowed us to considerably increase both the quantity and variety of JAX® Mice strains produced on the West Coast. As a result, researchers in the Western U.S. will benefit from greatly improved access to Gold Standard JAX® Mice, and expanded In Vivo Core and Cancer Services.

Grand Opening and Special Symposium

A Special Symposium and Grand Opening celebrating the new facility will occur on May 5-6 in Sacramento, Calif. The Symposium, Using Mouse Models to Accelerate Translational Medicine and Drug Discovery, will be held at the Hyatt Regency Sacramento on May 5 and the morning of May 6. It will focus on the increasing importance of mouse models for advancing human translational medicine and expediting drug development. Over 200 individuals from academia and the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries will participate. Scientists and leaders from academia, industry and The Jackson Laboratory will speak on a variety of relevant topics, including the evolution of mouse genetics as a systems genetics tool, using JAX® Mice as research tools, the role of the laboratory mouse in drug discovery and development, and humanized mouse models.

The Grand Opening will occur on May 6. The program will include tours of the state-of-the-art mouse production and in vivo services facility, a ribbon cutting, and comments from Jackson Laboratory senior management, California dignitaries, and industry leaders. Quick delivery for West Coast customers

JAX® Mice will be delivered to the region's customers quickly and on a convenient schedule. Just as in Bar Harbor, they will be packed in state-of-the-art sterilized shipping containers, shipped in specially-constructed trucks with alarmed environmental control systems, driven by highly skilled and experienced drivers, and delivered safely and in top health.

Same Gold Standard benchmark: superior genetic quality and health

To ensure that JAX® Mice produced at the new facility are as genetically identical as possible to those produced in Bar Harbor, the following protocols have been employed:

      • Pedigreed breeders from foundation colonies in Bar Harbor will be used to feed colonies in both locations
      • Identical genetic quality and integrity standards will be used at both facilities
      • Colonies at both facilities will be maintained using identical SOPs
      • Colonies at both facilities will be comparably fed, though they will be supplied with local drinking water
      • Our unique Genetic Stability Program will ensure that research conducted with mice from either facility will be comparable

The new facility is OLAW-assured and AAALAC-accredited. The Animal Health Program is modeled after our Bar Harbor program, which relies upon statistical sampling procedures and recognized serological and molecular testing protocols. Diagnostic test results will be posted on the JAX® Mice website, and Health Status Reports will accompany each mouse shipment.

Mice will be produced in sterile high-barrier rooms. Animal care procedures will be performed in HEPA-filtered changing stations and mice will be transferred to sterile microisolator cages with disinfected forceps. All supplies, equipment and protective clothing will be sterilized, and animal care personnel will pass through air showers before entering production areas. Mouse cages will be supplied with sterilized bedding, autoclaved or irradiated feed, and acidified and sterilized drinking water.

Bar Harbor Foundation Stocks

JAX® Mice in the new facility will be produced following the same stringent genetic quality control protocols used in Bar Harbor.
