Number of cryopreserved JAX® Mice strains grows by 800+

JAX® NOTES Issue 513, Spring 2009

Over the last two years, over 800 JAX® Mice strains have been added to the JAX Repository, expanding its already vast selection of unique genetically engineered mouse strains by 30% (Figure 1). The addition of many of these new strains has been possible due to the development of our innovative Sperm Cryopreservation and Recovery method and our Sponsored Strain Distribution Services. For example, Peter Mombaerts, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the Department of Molecular Neurogenetics at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics, Frankfurt, Germany, used our Freeze Team to cryopreserve over a hundred of his unique mouse strains, all of which we now distribute (read all the details on the website (.pdf)).

Figure 1. The number of cryopreserved mouse strains added to the JAX® Mice Repository has been steadily increasing.

An additional 270 strains have been submitted to our Repository through our Sponosored Strain Distribution Service.

Investigators recognize that donating their strains to our Repository is convenient and fulfills the NIH mandate to share model organisms. For information on how to donate your strain to our Repository, go to our website.

Requests for our cryopreserved strains are growing rapidly. From 2007 to 2008 alone, orders for cryopreserved strains increased 50% - from 774 to 1180 (Figure 2). Many customers subsequently use our Dedicated Supply Service to have us produce a colony sized to meet their needs. Our Breeding and Colony Management Services can perform special crosses with these and our extensive collection of Cre strains to produce novel conditional tissue-specific knockouts. We attribute the increased size, value, and availability of our collection to the reliability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of our Sperm Cryo Preservation and Recovery technology. This innovative technology has made it possible to reduce the cost of cryopreservation and provide a flexible means of expanding mouse colonies. Researchers are using our Sperm Cryo and Recovery Service to save mouse room space, safeguard strains against natural or other disasters, and make their strains more accessible to their colleagues. (See the article on our "Do-it-yourself Sperm Cryo Kit".)
