JAX® Mice shipping container Lab Animal Health statement
The JAX shipping container has proven effective in protecting the health and comfort of JAX® Mice during shipping within the United States and overseas. Extensive beta testing during the warmest months of the summer showed that:
- bedding within the new container remained acceptably dry and the container did not leak;
- food and water (Napa Nectar®) levels were more than adequate to maintain 20 mice for up to 7 days in transit;
- mice shipped by commercial air carriers were free of pathogens when tested 1 month after receipt at their U.S. or European destination.
Whereas mice shipped in the previous (cardboard) shipping container lost weight during transit, mice shipped at densities up to 20 mice/box actually gained weight during truck transport in the current container. Our container has been designed and tested to prevent chew-through by those strains most prone to chewing.
Based on these and other findings, The Jackson Laboratory’s Laboratory Animal Health department has approved the shipping container and enthusiastically endorses it as a significant improvement over our old cardboard shipping container.
