JAX® Mice availability information (standard supply levels)
Maintaining optimal levels of availability for thousands of unique JAX® Mice strains, as well as responding quickly to changes in demand, is complex and challenging. We continually review and adjust inventory levels to keep pace with researchers' changing needs. To help you plan for experiments involving JAX® Mice, we have designated each JAX® Mice strain with a Standard Supply Level. These levels indicate the quantities of mice that we typically can ship from colonies during a fixed period of time (e.g., one month or three months).
Many strains which require genotyping are shipped at a minimum of six to seven weeks of age.
Order fulfillment
We fill all orders as soon as possible, in the order in which we receive them. We give backorders first priority as inventory becomes available. Occasionally, due to sudden fluctuations in demand, breeding problems, or licensing issues, we may need to delay shipments.
Cryopreservation repository
To uphold our responsibility as an international repository for laboratory mice, we maintain many JAX® Mice strains that have extremely limited and infrequent demand. Such strains are often retained as cryopreserved embryos or sperm. Upon receipt of your order for a cryopreserved strain, Customer Service will send you an agreement to sign. Once we have a signed agreement in hand we will begin the strain recovery process.
New strains under development
Each year, hundreds of new mouse models become available from The Jackson Laboratory. Due to the inherent complexities of breeding and maintaining mutant mice, the development process (i.e. importing, rederiving, genotyping, developing a starter colony, and expanding it for public distribution) usually takes six to 12 months. While a strain is being developed, you can help us better predict demand and the optimal colony size by registering your interest in it. You can do this by contacting Customer Service or by visiting our new strains under development site.
Registering your interest in a strain also ensures that you receive advance notice (typically three weeks) of its pending availability. You can then order that strain before it becomes publicly available.
Standard supply levels
Level 1
JAX Ready Strain® Most popular strains. Readily available in any quantity you need.
Level 2
Up to 100 mice. Larger quantities or custom orders arranged upon request.
Level 3
Up to 50 mice. Larger quantities or custom orders arranged upon request.
Level 4
Up to 10 mice. Larger quantities or custom orders arranged upon request. Expected delivery up to 1-3 months.
Repository - Live
A collection of over 1000 strains maintained as live colonies. Individual colonies are sized to meet current customer demand. Delivery for orders of 10 mice or less ranges on average from one to eight weeks; mice are generally shipped between four to six weeks of age with a maximum shipping age of ~nine weeks. Colony sizes do not generally support stringent age specifications for large volumes of mice; however custom orders and larger quantities of mice are easily arranged. Estimated ship dates for all orders provided within 48 hours of order placement.
Research Strain
Availability determined by The Jackson Laboratory Researcher holding the strain.
Repository - Cryopreserved
Must Be Recovered.
Please refer to the supply notes below for specific information for a standard cryorecovery and a cryorecovery of a strain needing progeny testing.
-
Cryorecovery--Standard.
The recovery process begins when a signed agreement form is returned to the Customer Service Department after order placement. Although results vary by strain, at least two males and two females (two pairs) will be provided, typically within 15 weeks of our receipt of the signed agreement form. If the first recovery attempt is unsuccessful or only one pair is recovered, a second recovery will be done, extending the delivery time to approximately 25 weeks. At least one member of each pair will be of known genotype and will carry the mutation if it is a mutant strain. Please note that pairs may not reflect the mating scheme utilized by The Jackson Laboratory prior to cryopreservation of the strain. Mating schemes are sometimes modified for successful cryopreservation. Price represents a repository maintenance fee, which includes the cost of recovery of the strain from the cryopreservation resource and the periodic replacement of the frozen embryos used for recovery.
Cryorecovery to establish a Dedicated Supply for greater quantities of mice. One to two pairs will be recovered to establish a Dedicated Supply of mice. Price by quotation. For more information on Dedicated Supply please contact JAX® Services: Tel: 1-800-422-6423 or 1-207-288-5845; email: jaxservices@jax.org.

Cryorecovery of strains needing progeny testing.
The recovery process begins when a signed agreement form is returned to the Customer Service Department after order placement. Although results vary by strain, at least two untested males and two untested females (two pairs) will be recovered, typically within 15 weeks of our receipt of the signed agreement form. If the first recovery attempt is unsuccessful or only one pair is recovered, a second recovery will be done, extending the overall recovery time to approximately 25 weeks. However, all pups recovered will be sent.
Progeny testing is required to identify the genotype of mice of this strain, as a genotyping assay is not available. This type of testing involves breeding the recovered animals and assessing the phenotype of the offspring in order to identify animals carrying the mutation of interest. We can perform the progeny testing for you as a service or we can ship all recovered animals (at least two untested pairs) to you for progeny testing at your facility. If you perform the progeny testing, there is NO guarantee that a carrier will be identified. If we perform progeny testing as a service, additional breeding time will be required. In this case, when a male and female (one pair) are identified that carry the mutation, they and their offspring will be shipped. Delivery time for strains requiring progeny testing often exceeds 25 weeks and may take 12 months or more due to the difficulties in breeding some strains. The progeny testing cost is in addition to the recovery cost and is based on the number of boxes used and the time taken to produce the mice identified as carrying the mutation. Please note that identified pairs may not reflect the mating scheme utilized by The Jackson Laboratory prior to cryopreservation of the strain. Mating schemes are sometimes modified for successful cryopreservation. Please contact Customer Service for more information on the cost of progeny testing for a strain: Tel: 1-800-422-6423 or 1-207-288-5845.
