Type JAX® GEMM® Strain - Mutant Stock Additional information on JAX® GEMM® Strains. Type JAX® GEMM® Strain - Spontaneous Mutation Species laboratory mouse Generation N34 Strain Development
The semi-dominant mutation waved coat (Wc) arose spontaneously in 1969 among the descendants of a linkage cross with depilated (dep). The first waved coat male was mated to a C57BL/6J female and the F1 pair was mated. From here on to N6 a Wc/+ male was mated to a C57BL/6J female at each generation. At N6 a Wc/+ male was mated to a C3FeLe.B6-a/a female. The F1 offspring were mated and the F2 Wc/+ male was mated to a B6C3Fe-a/a F1 hybrid. The stock was then maintained by continuous matings of a waved coated male to a B6C3Fe-a/a F1 female. Embryos were generated for cryopreservation in 1979 by mating a Wc/+ male to a +/+ female.

| General Note | Heterozygotes have a wavy coat and whiskers. They are recognizable at 4 or 5 days of age by a lighter color, wavy irregular whiskers, and short fuzzy hair on the head and upper back. On some genetic backgrounds, heterozygotes may be more severely affected; the skin becomes dry and scaly after birth, no hair develops, and the mice die before weaning. On an outbred background heterozygotes are normally viable and fertile (J:13535). Homozygotes die in utero. After differentiation of embryonic and extraembryonic ectoderm, the embryonic ectoderm becomes pycnotic and degenerates, leaving an ``extraembryonic organism'' consisting of relatively normal yolk sac, chorion, and allantois and devoid of an embryo proper (J:13664). | ||

Cryorecovery - Standard. The recovery process begins when a signed agreement form is returned to the Customer Service Department after order placement. Although results vary by strain, at least two males and two females (two pairs) will be provided, typically within 15 weeks of our receipt of the signed agreement form. If the first recovery attempt is unsuccessful or only one pair is recovered, a second recovery will be done, extending the delivery time to approximately 25 weeks. At least one member of each pair will be of known genotype and will carry the mutation if it is a mutant strain. Please note that pairs may not reflect the mating scheme utilized by The Jackson Laboratory prior to cryopreservation of the strain. Mating schemes are sometimes modified for successful cryopreservation. Price represents a repository maintenance fee, which includes the cost of recovery of the strain from the cryopreservation resource and the periodic replacement of the frozen embryos used for recovery. Cryorecovery to establish a Dedicated Supply for greater quantities of mice. |
