Former Names C3H/HeJ-md/+ (Changed: 15-DEC-04 ) Type Coisogenic; Mutant Strain; Spontaneous Mutation; Additional information on Genetically Engineered Mutant Mice. Species laboratory mouse Development
Mahoganoid (Mgrnmd) arose spontaneously in strain C3H/HeJ at the Jackson Laboratory in 1957. Homozygotes were sibling mated to F5 and then a homozygous female was crossed to an unpedigreed C3H/HeJ male. The stock was then sibling mated using forced heterozygosis. It was cryopreserved in 1998 at F158 by mating homozygous females to heterozygous males.

| General Note | The original md mutation arose in the C3H/HeJ strain. This gene is similar to mahogany (Atrnmg) in its effects on coat color, but causes less darkening of the back, ears, and tail of agouti mice (J:13379)(J:13791). | ||
| Molecular Note | The mutation in md has been attributed to a 5 kb retroviral insertion located in the intronic region 5' of exon 12. Northern analysis and RT-PCR indicate that the expression of transcript is greatly reduced in these mice. [MGI Ref ID J:80182] | ||
This strain will not have a genotyping protocol or one is not currently available.
