Generation DefinitionsGeographic Origin Centreville, Queen Anne City, Eastern Shore, Maryland Appearance
agouti with head blaze, greyish coat
Related Genotype: A/ADescription
Watkins Star Line B (WSB) was derived from wild mice trapped in Eastern Shore, Maryland. WSB is characterized by a distinct and consistent white head blaze, variable ventral spotting and a slight coat dilution on the agouti background. The variation in pigment is the result of the spontaneous mutation blaze (Kitlblz). Wild-derived mice are genetically distinct from common laboratory mice for a number of complex phenotypic characteristics and are valuable tools for genetic mapping, evolution and systematics research.Development
Founder mice for the wild-derived strain Watkins Star Line B (WSB) were trapped in Eastern Shore, Maryland by Michael Potter (NCI) in 1976. One of two lines, WSB was selected for dark agouti coat color with white head blaze. Mice were sent to EM Eicher at The Jackson Laboratory in 1986.

| General Note | The A allele is usually regarded as a wild-type allele. The C3H and CBA mouse sublines are homozygous for agouti. Hairs are black with a subapical yellow band. This black-yellow-black pattern is referred to as agouti. The general appearance is yellowish brown, slightly lighter on the belly than on the back. | ||
| Molecular Note | This allele, often referred to as wild-type, comprises a novel 131 amino acid protein encoded in a gene comprising four exons, three coding, spanning 18kb. Unique changes in this gene account for all other alleles that have been molecularly characterized. The expression of this allele is almost always dominant to other alleles of this gene.
