Specieslaboratory mouse
GenerationN21pN2 (07-DEC-05)

Strain Description
Lse/+ pups can be identified at birth by the presence of an open auditory meatus, which in normal mice remains closed until approximately day 13, when the eyes also open. Fewer than the expected 50% affected pups are born, and about 50% of pups identified as Lse/+ fail to survive until weaning. Homozygotes either die prenatally or are indistinguishable from heterozygotes.

The ears of Lse/+ mice are positioned lower and further forward than those of normal mice and are abnormally formed. These mice are not deaf. In addition to the ear abnormalities, Lse/+ mice are smaller than their normal littermates and have opaque corneas (Theiler and Sweet 1986).

Strain Development
Low set ears, Lse, is a dominant mutation first observed in a male pup from a cross between the recipient of an ovary transplant from a Lmx1adr-J/Lmx1adr-J female and a C3HeB/FeJLe-a/a male. Lse has been maintained since its discovery by crossing affected male or female mice at each generation with B6C3Fe-a/a (C57BL/6J X C3HeB/FeJLe-a/a) F1 hybrid mice (Theiler and Sweet 1986).

Gene & Allele Details

Allele Symbol Lse
Allele Name low set ears
Strain of OriginSTOCK Lmx1adr-J x C3HeB/FeJLe-a/a
General Note Heterozygotes can be recognized at birth; the external auditory meatus which is sealed over by the pinna in normal mice remains open. Adults have abnormally shaped external ears which appear to be set lower on the head than normal. The pinna is smaller than normal and the tragus and antitragus are set wider apart, widely exposing the entrance of the auditory meatus. The cornea is opaque and the mutants are smaller than normal and suffer high mortality before weaning. No inner-ear defects or cleft palate have been observed. Homozygotes have not been identified. Heterozygotes can be recognized at 13 days of gestation by the position of the primitive pinna which is placed more posteriorly than in controls (J:8618).

Allele Symbol a
Allele Name nonagouti

Standard SupplyRepository-Live. A collection of over 1000 strains maintained as live colonies. Individual colonies are sized to meet current customer demand. Delivery for orders of 10 mice or less ranges on average from one to eight weeks; mice are generally shipped between four to six weeks of age with a maximum shipping age of ~nine weeks. Colony sizes do not generally support stringent age specifications for large volumes of mice; however custom orders and larger quantities of mice are easily arranged. Estimated ship dates for all orders provided within 48 hours of order placement.

The Jackson Laboratory's Genotype Promise

The Jackson Laboratory has rigorous genetic quality control and mutant gene genotyping programs to ensure the genetic background of JAX® Mice strains as well as the genotypes of strains with identified molecular mutations. JAX® Mice strains are only made available to researchers after meeting our standards. However, the phenotype of each strain may not be fully characterized and/or captured in the strain data sheets. Therefore, we cannot guarantee a strain's phenotype will meet all expectations. To ensure that JAX® Mice will meet the needs of individual research projects or when requesting a strain that is new to your research, we suggest ordering and performing tests on a small number of mice to determine suitability for your particular project.
