The semi-dominant mutation lurcher Jackson (Grid2Lc-J) arose spontaneously in the inbred strain BALB/cByJ at The Jackson Laboratory in 1993. The stock was maintained by mating a heterozygote with a wild type (+/+) sibling. It was cryopreserved in 1995 by mating C57BL/6J females with heterozygous males at generation F?+5 to generate embryos.

| General Note | The lurcher Jackson mutation arose spontaneously in a BALB/cByJ stock at The Jackson Laboratory (J:42385), and was determined to be a mutation the Grid2 gene (J:42431). It causes early cerebellar Purkinje cell loss and development of ataxia in heterozygotes. Homozygotes die early in life, many perinatally. The phenotype resembles that of lurcher; the mutation maps to the same segment of Chr 6; and complementation is lacking in offspring of test crosses (J:42385). | ||
