Type Mutant Strain; Spontaneous Mutation; Additional information on Genetically Engineered and Mutant Mice. Visit our online Nomenclature tutorial. Species laboratory mouse Generation N7 Development
The hyrt mutation arose spontaneously at The Jackson Laboratory in the inbred strain AKR/J in early 1993 when that strain was at generation F197. This mutation was maintained on the AKR/J background for 4 generations then outcrossed to a B6C3Fe a/a F1 hybrid and maintained thereafter by outcross-intercross using B6C3Fe a/a males bred either with homozygous females or hosts of ovaries transplanted from homozygotes. In 2006 this strain reached generation N17F1.

The following phenotype information may relate to a genetic background differing from this JAX® Mice strain.
Trak1hyrt/Trak1hyrt
AKR
- behavior/neurological phenotype
- abnormal posture (MGI Ref ID J:90779)
- impaired coordination (MGI Ref ID J:90779)
- weakness (MGI Ref ID J:90779)
- display hypertonicity and spasticity
- weakness

involves: AKR * C3HeB/FeJ * C57BL/6J
- behavior/neurological phenotype
- abnormal gait (MGI Ref ID J:105231)
- stiff gait
- first noticeable at 2 weeks of age
- hunched posture (MGI Ref ID J:105231)
- first noticeable at 2 weeks of age
- jerky movement (MGI Ref ID J:105231)
- first noticeable at 2 weeks of age
- tremors (MGI Ref ID J:105231)
- slight tremors
- first noticeable at 2 weeks of age
- muscle phenotype
- abnormal muscle physiology (MGI Ref ID J:105231)
- highly elevate baseline motor unit activity in muscles of both forelimb and hind limb
- motor unit activity reduced by diazepam which enhances GABAergic transmission
- nervous system phenotype
- abnormal neuron morphology (MGI Ref ID J:105231)
- oval shaped aggregates of vescicular structures with 2-layer membranes in the gray matter of brainstem and spinal cord
- inclusions found in neuronal processes only, possibly in dendrites
- become detectable at 2-4 weeks of age
- life span-post-weaning/aging
- premature death (MGI Ref ID J:105231)
- some deaths among adolescent mice but most have normal life spans
