One caveat to working with C3H inbred mice is the retinal degeneration caused by the Pde6brd1 mutation. This congenic has the wild-type allele of Pde6b from C57BL/LiA bred onto the C3H/HeSnJ background and thus offers most of the strain characteristics of the robust C3H background but without the early onset retinal degeneration.

Description

Development
C3A.BLiA-Pde6b+/J (Stock No. 001912) mice harboring the C57BL/LiA-derived wild-type allele of Pde6b were backcrossed for ten generations to C3H/HeSnJ inbred mice (Stock No. 000661) at The Jackson Laboratory. This was done for the purpose of generating a hardier control/background strain for use in studies of additional retinal degeneration mutations.

The Jackson Laboratory's Genotype Promise

The Jackson Laboratory has rigorous genetic quality control and mutant gene genotyping programs to ensure the genetic background of JAX® Mice strains as well as the genotypes of strains with identified molecular mutations. JAX® Mice strains are only made available to researchers after meeting our standards. However, the phenotype of each strain may not be fully characterized and/or captured in the strain data sheets. Therefore, we cannot guarantee a strain's phenotype will meet all expectations. To ensure that JAX® Mice will meet the needs of individual research projects or when requesting a strain that is new to your research, we suggest ordering and performing tests on a small number of mice to determine suitability for your particular project.
