This allelic congenic strain commonly called D.R1, carries a defined segment of Chr. 17 that includes the ALR H2gx complex and insulin dependent diabetes susceptibility locus 16, Idd16aALR. At 35 weeks of age diabetes incidence in this NOD.ALR strain is significantly suppressed with about 60% of the females and less than 20% of the males diabetic as compared to NOD/ShiLt in which 100% of the females and nearly 70% of the males were diabetic. Histological exam of the pancreas of 40-week old pre-diabetic animals showed widespread intra-islet insulitis. This strain is useful for identifying candidate genes and dissecting the role of Idd16a in autoimmune diabetes.Development
ALR/LtJ-derived portions of the Idd16 locus were introgressed onto the genetic background of NOD/LtJ. Parental strain ALR/LtJ is resistant to insulin-dependent (type 1) diabetes whereas parental strain NOD/LtJ is susceptible. This strain was produced by mating mice from NOD/ShiLt to ALR/Lt followed by 10 additional crosses to NOD/ShiLt with selection for H2gx complex at each generation. Siblings carrying the ALR/Lt derived D17Mit16 through D17Mit10 were intercrossed to make homozygous. In 2007, the T1DR received this strain at generation N10F17.
