Specieslaboratory mouse
H2 Haplotyped
GenerationF39 (07-DEC-07)

Appearance
black, waddles
Related Genotype: a/a Car8wdl/Car8wdl

black, unaffected
Related Genotype: a/a Car8wdl/+

Description
wdl homozygotes display a side-to-side wobble in their gait as early as two weeks of age and this persists throughout life. Despite this, they can swim in a straight line.

Development
The waddles mutation arose spontaneously in the C57BLKS/J production colony at The Jackson Laboratory in 1995 when that strain was at F104. The waddles bearing strain has been maintained by sibling mating and in 2004 reached F24.

Gene & Allele Information

Allele Symbol Car8wdl
Allele Name waddles
Allele Type Spontaneous
Common Name(s) rig; rigoletto;
Strain of OriginC57BLKS/J
Gene Symbol and Name Car8, carbonic anhydrase 8
Chromosome 4
Gene Common Name(s) AW546993; CA-RP VIII; CA-VIII; CALS; CARP; Ca8; Cals1; Carp; MGC105764; MGC120502; MGC99509; carbonic anhydrase related polypeptide; carbonic anhydrase-like sequence 1; expressed sequence AW546993; waddles; wdl;
General Note This mutation arose at The Jackson Laboratory. Homozygous mutant mice display a wobbly side-to-side gait which is noticable by two weeks of age and remains phenotypically similar throughout life. Some, but not all, of the homozygous mutant mice are slightly smaller than normal littermates. Homozygotes do not clasp their hind legs when picked up by the tail. Both mutant and control mice swim in a straight line when placed in water. Heterozygotes are indistinguishable from their normal littermates. Males and females are viable and fertile.
Molecular Note Mutant mice contain a 19-nucleotide deletion, 15 of which are flanked by two AAGG motifs. Car8 transcript is absent in homozygous mice, suggesting that this is a null mutation. [MGI Ref ID J:103673]

Standard SupplyRepository-Live. A collection of over 1000 strains maintained as live colonies. Individual colonies are sized to meet current customer demand. Delivery for orders of 10 mice or less ranges on average from one to eight weeks; mice are generally shipped between four to six weeks of age with a maximum shipping age of ~nine weeks. Colony sizes do not generally support stringent age specifications for large volumes of mice; however custom orders and larger quantities of mice are easily arranged. Estimated ship dates for all orders provided within 48 hours of order placement.

The Jackson Laboratory's Genotype Promise

The Jackson Laboratory has rigorous genetic quality control and mutant gene genotyping programs to ensure the genetic background of JAX® Mice strains as well as the genotypes of strains with identified molecular mutations. JAX® Mice strains are only made available to researchers after meeting our standards. However, the phenotype of each strain may not be fully characterized and/or captured in the strain data sheets. Therefore, we cannot guarantee a strain's phenotype will meet all expectations. To ensure that JAX® Mice will meet the needs of individual research projects or when requesting a strain that is new to your research, we suggest ordering and performing tests on a small number of mice to determine suitability for your particular project.
