Mice homozygous for the pirouette 3 Jackson mutation display bi-directional circling and head bobbing and are completely deaf by ABR assessment. Consistent with a vestibular defect, they fail to swim at the surface of water, but instead roll underwater and sink before rescue.Development
The pirouette 3 Jackson mutation arose spontaneously in 2002 at The Jackson Laboratory in the strain BKS.Cg-Dock7m +/+ Leprdb/J (Stock No. 000642) when that strain was at generation F97. After several generations of sibling inbreeding this mutant subline was backcrossed to the C57BLKS/J inbred twice to remove the misty and diabetes mutations from this strain and has subsequently been maintained by sibling breeding heterozygous females with homozygous males.
