Type Coisogenic; Mutant Strain; Spontaneous Mutation; Additional information on Genetically Engineered Mutant Mice. Species laboratory mouse Generation F243+F3+N1F16 (07-DEC-07) Description
Mice homozygous for the ctl mutation are easily recognizable at birth by their curly or bent tails.Development
The ctl mutation arose spontaneously on the A/WySnJ background at The Jackson Laboratory when that strain was at F243. It has been maintained primarily through sibling breeding with one backcross to A/WySnJ. In 2004 this strain reached generation F243+F3+N1F7.

A/WySnJ-ctl/J
- hearing/vestibular/ear phenotype
- *normal* hearing/vestibular/ear phenotype (MGI Ref ID J:91389)
- hearing of 2 homozygous mutant mice was normal at 6 weeks of age as determined by acoustic brainstem response (ABR)
- immune system phenotype
- arthritis (MGI Ref ID J:91389)
- mild spinal arthritis was detected at 3 months by pathology screen
- limbs/digits/tail phenotype
- abnormal caudal vertebrae morphology (MGI Ref ID J:91389)
- tail vertebrae are abnormally shaped, causing the tail to curl or kink; skeleton appeared otherwise normal on X-ray images
- curly tail (MGI Ref ID J:91389)
- incompletely penetrant: matings of ctl/ctl to ctl/+ mice yielded 26% affected progeny, indicating approximately 50% penetrance in this background
- skeleton phenotype
- abnormal caudal vertebrae morphology (MGI Ref ID J:91389)
- tail vertebrae are abnormally shaped, causing the tail to curl or kink; skeleton appeared otherwise normal on X-ray images
- arthritis (MGI Ref ID J:91389)
- mild spinal arthritis was detected at 3 months by pathology screen
- vision/eye phenotype
- *normal* vision/eye phenotype (MGI Ref ID J:91389)
- eyes of homozygous mutant mice examined ophthalmoscopically at 6 weeks and 3 months of age appeared normal
- nervous system phenotype
- hydroencephaly (MGI Ref ID J:91389)
- mild: detected at 3 months by pathology screen; not associated with cerebellar abnormality in liveborn mice

| General Note | In the homozygous state, this mutation causes a phenotype similar to that of ct, curly tail; both show low penetrance and map to approximately the same region of Chr 4. A complementation test between mice homozygous for ct and for ctl yielded no affectedmice among 56 progeny, but because of the low penetrance of the phenotype, this does not rule out their being allelic. | ||
| Molecular Note | This spontaneous mutation arose at The Jackson Laboratory. | ||
This strain will not have a genotyping protocol or one is not currently available.

| Standard Supply | Repository-Live. A collection of over 1000 strains maintained as live colonies. Individual colonies are sized to meet current customer demand. Delivery for orders of 10 mice or less ranges on average from one to eight weeks; mice are generally shipped between four to six weeks of age with a maximum shipping age of ~nine weeks. Colony sizes do not generally support stringent age specifications for large volumes of mice; however custom orders and larger quantities of mice are easily arranged. Estimated ship dates for all orders provided within 48 hours of order placement. |
