Type JAX® GEMM® Strain - Congenic Additional information on JAX® GEMM® Strains. Type JAX® GEMM® Strain - Mutant Strain Species laboratory mouse H2 Haplotype s2 (see, Fischer Lindahl K 1997 and Shen FW 1982) Appearance
albino
Related Genotype: p Tyrc/ p TyrcImportant Note
This strain is homozygous for the retinal degeneration allele Pde6brd1.Strain Description
This SJL/J congenic strain carries the T lymphocyte specific Thy1a (Thy1.1) allele. Donor T cells can be easily distinguished from recipient T cells by both flow cytometric and histological analysis. SJL/J mice are a model of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). This congenic is useful for EAE research requiring an adoptive transfer system.Strain Development
The donating investigator, Dr. Harley Y. Tse, backcrossed this congenic 12 times and then intercrossed to produce Thy1a homozygotes. Thy1a mice were selected using flow cytometry. The incross (F) generation number is unknown. The strain was cryopreserved as embryos in 1995. The embryos were donated to The Jackson Laboratory in 2005.

| General Note |
The Thy1 locus determines an antigen present on cells of the thymus, a number of mouse leukemias, brain, and in lesser amounts on lymph node and spleen cells. The allele Thy1a determines an antigenic specificity, Thy-1.1, found in the AKR and RF strains; the allele Thy1b determines an antigenic specificity, Thy-1.2, found in the C3HeB/Fe and many other strains (J:5243, J:5012, J:4469). The Thy1 antigen is probably present on all T lymphocytes and absent from all B lymphocytes, and it thus serves as a valuable T-cell marker (J:5243). It is very widely used in experimentsdesigned to determine the distribution and function of T-cells. Thy1 specifies a T-cell surface glycoprotein, T25, with a molecular weight of 25 kDa (J:5707). The protein appears to be anchored in the cell membrane by a lipid that is either phosphotidylinositol or closely related to it (J:12016). Thy1 may function in the cell membrane as a signal transduction molecule (J:8333). The Thy1 locus, or possibly a gene closely linked to it, controls quantitative expression of a protein that is the same size as Thy1 and is expressed on thymus and brain but not on lymph node and spleen cells (J:7900). | ||

Cryorecovery - Standard. The recovery process begins when a signed agreement form is returned to the Customer Service Department after order placement. Although results vary by strain, at least two males and two females (two pairs) will be provided, typically within 15 weeks of our receipt of the signed agreement form. If the first recovery attempt is unsuccessful or only one pair is recovered, a second recovery will be done, extending the delivery time to approximately 25 weeks. At least one member of each pair will be of known genotype and will carry the mutation if it is a mutant strain. Please note that pairs may not reflect the mating scheme utilized by The Jackson Laboratory prior to cryopreservation of the strain. Mating schemes are sometimes modified for successful cryopreservation. Price represents a repository maintenance fee, which includes the cost of recovery of the strain from the cryopreservation resource and the periodic replacement of the frozen embryos used for recovery. Cryorecovery to establish a Dedicated Supply for greater quantities of mice. |
