Type Mutant Strain; Spontaneous Mutation; Additional information on Genetically Engineered Mutant Mice. Species laboratory mouse Generation F90+F10N5F1pN1 Development
The mutation tremor and reduced life span (trls) arose spontaneously at The Jackson Laboratory in the strain BKS.Cg-m +/+ Leprdb/J in 2000. Because homozygotes are not suitable breeders, this mutant subline was maintained by breeding hosts of homozygous ovarian transplant with donor sibling males. This was done for 10 generations before being maintained by ovarian transplant backcross-intercross to C57BLKS/J. In 2005 this strain reached generation F10N4 and the misty (m) and diabetic (Leprdb) mutations have not been seen since the initial generation so it is expected that they have been bred out.

trls/trls
Background Not Specified
- behavior/neurological phenotype
- tremors (MGI Ref ID J:103185)
- tremor in 14 day old pups is similar to that seen with other demyelinating mutations
- growth/size phenotype
- decreased body size (MGI Ref ID J:103185)
- smaller body size is evident at 14 days of age
- lethality-postnatal
- postnatal lethality (MGI Ref ID J:103185)
- most homozygous mice die at 3 weeks of age, although a few may survive longer
- reproductive system phenotype
- azoospermia (MGI Ref ID J:103185)
- absent sperm at 3 weeks of age in 3 mutant male mice; one 9 week old mouse did not show this phenotype
- nervous system phenotype
- *normal* nervous system phenotype (MGI Ref ID J:103185)
- peripheral and central nervous system myelination appears normal at 9 weeks of age
- hearing/vestibular/ear phenotype
- decreased brainstem auditory evoked potential (MGI Ref ID J:103185)
- variable penetrance; mild hearing impairment is shown by an increased threshold for high frequency stimuli, but the wave pattern is similar to controls unlike in demyelinating mutations
