Type JAX® GEMM® Strain - Congenic Additional information on JAX® GEMM® Strains. Type JAX® GEMM® Strain - Mutant Strain Type JAX® GEMM® Strain - Transgenic Mating System Noncarrier x Hemizygote (Female x Male) Species laboratory mouse Donating Investigator Manami Hara, University of Chicago Generation N4 (15-MAY-08) Strain Description
Mice hemizygous for this "MIP-RFP" transgene are viable, fertile, normal in size and do not display any gross physical or behavioral abnormalities. These transgenic mice express the DsRed.T4 variant of Enhanced Red Fluorescent Protein under the control of mouse insulin 1 promoter. Fluorescence is detected in tissues where insulin I is normally expressed; fluorescent protein expression in pancreatic beta-cells is evident from embryonic day (E)13.5 through adult. Transgenic mice exhibit normal glucose tolerance and pancreatic insulin levels. While the human growth hormone sequence in the transgene is designed to enhance expression of the fluorescent protein and is not expressed in a similarly constructed transgene (see Stock No. 006864), whether or not it is expressed for this strain was not characterized. This mutant mouse strain may be useful in studies of pancreatic development and pancreatic beta islet cell biology. In an attempt to offer alleles on well-characterized or multiple genetic backgrounds, alleles are frequently moved to a genetic background different from that on which an allele was first characterized. It should be noted that the phenotype could vary from that originally described. We will modify the strain description if necessary as published results become available.
Strain Development
A transgenic construct containing the Red Fluorescent Protein (DsRed.T4 variant) gene and 2.1kb of sequence from the human growth hormone gene (to confer high expression of the DsRed.T4) under the control of the mouse insulin 1 promoter was injected into fertilized CD1 mouse eggs. Founder line 32 was subsequently established. Upon arrival at The Jackson Laboratory, transgenic mice on this outbred background (see Stock No. 006866) were bred to C57BL/6J inbred mice for at least 5 generations to generate this congenic strain (Stock No. 006872).

Tg(Ins1-DsRed*T4)32Hara
| Breeding & Husbandry | When maintaining a live colony, hemizygotes are bred to C57BL/6J inbred mice. The Donating Investigator reports that homozygous mice (on the original CD1 outbred background) are viable and fertile, but has not confirmed homozygosity. |

| Standard Supply | Repository-Live. A collection of over 1000 strains maintained as live colonies. Individual colonies are sized to meet current customer demand. Delivery for orders of 10 mice or less ranges on average from one to eight weeks; mice are generally shipped between four to six weeks of age with a maximum shipping age of ~nine weeks. Colony sizes do not generally support stringent age specifications for large volumes of mice; however custom orders and larger quantities of mice are easily arranged. Estimated ship dates for all orders provided within 48 hours of order placement. |
