Thin hair homozygotes have a sparse coat discernible by two weeks of age. By three weeks of age the pelt has fewer zigzag hairs than normal and by four weeks of age skin follicles are somewhat dilated with degeneration of the deepest portions of the anagen hair follicles. Hair fragments from degenerating follicles are found in the connective tissue and granulomatous inflammation develops.Development
The thin hair mutation arose spontaneously on the NOD/ShiLtJ inbred background at The Jackson Laboratory in 2006. This mutation was backcrossed onto the NOD.B10Sn-H2b/J (Stock No. 002591) background via repeated backcross-intercross breeding in order to remove the diabetic phenotype, which complicated strain maintenance. In 2008 this strain reached generation N4F1.

NOD.Cg-H2b thnh/J
- skin/coat/nails phenotype
- abnormal hair follicle morphology (MGI Ref ID J:142872)
- the follicles are somewhat dilated with the deepest portions of anagen hair follicles in the subcutaneous adipose layer degenerating
- folliculitis (MGI Ref ID J:142872)
- at 3 weeks of age crowded follicles and skin inflammation are found
- at 4 weeks of age pieces of hair from broken down follicles are found free in the connective tissue and seem to cause severe foreign body granulomatous inflammation within giant cells
- decreased zigzag hair amount (MGI Ref ID J:142872)
- all four hair types are present, but there are fewer zigzags than normal
- sparse hair (MGI Ref ID J:142872)
- evident by 2 weeks of age
- immune system phenotype
- folliculitis (MGI Ref ID J:142872)
- at 3 weeks of age crowded follicles and skin inflammation are found
- at 4 weeks of age pieces of hair from broken down follicles are found free in the connective tissue and seem to cause severe foreign body granulomatous inflammation within giant cells

| Standard Supply | Repository-Live. A collection of over 1000 strains maintained as live colonies. Individual colonies are sized to meet current customer demand. Delivery for orders of 10 mice or less ranges on average from one to eight weeks; mice are generally shipped between four to six weeks of age with a maximum shipping age of approximately nine weeks. Colony sizes do not generally support stringent age specifications for large volumes of mice; however custom orders and larger quantities of mice are easily arranged. Estimated ship dates for all orders provided within two business days following order placement. |
