Mating System Sibling x Sibling (Female x Male) 09-JAN-12 Species laboratory mouse RI progenitor C57BL/6J DBA/2J Donating Investigator Robert Williams, University of Tennessee Health Science C Description
The BXD#/Rww recombinant inbred (RI) strains originate from crosses between C57BL/6J (000664) females and DBA/2J (000671) males and were generated using a strategy of advanced intercrosses (AI). The AI technique produces recombinant RI strains which incorporate approximately twice as many recombinations as the standard RI strains. RI strains may be used to study the genetics of behavioral phenotypes (including alcohol and drug addiction, stress, and locomotor activity) and complex or potentially complex physiologic phenotypes (including differences in organ weight and bone mineral density). The addition of the AI BXD RI lines to the existing BXD set creates the largest of the mouse RI mapping panels. This set is useful in QTL mapping and analysis of gene function.
Development
The BXD#/Rww advanced recombinant inbred (ARI) lines are derived from two independently derived advanced intercrosses between the C57BL/6J and DBA/2J progenitor strains generated at Princeton University and the University of Tennessee. Mice from the Tennessee crosses were initiated with reciprocal crosses of the parental strains. As a result, mice from the Tennessee set can have the Y chromosome and mitochondrial genome from either progenitor. All ARI lines were intercrossed for 9-14 generations before inbreeding. The Tennessee crosses miminized common ancestors in each cross. The BXD53 line experienced breeding difficulties in 2004 at F12 and was reduced to a single male. This male was mated to a C57BL/6 female; female progeny from this mating were crossed to the original BXD53 male. The colony is maintained by sibling mating achieving F29 in 2011. This line was donated to The Jackson Laboratory Repository in 2012 by Dr. Robert Williams.
