Mice of this hybrid cross develop an autoimmune disease resembling human systemic lupus erythematosus. Autoimmunity is characterized by high levels of antinuclear antibodies, hemolytic anemia, proteinuria, and progressive immune complex glomerulonephritis. NZBWF1/J mice have been used as a model for autoimmune disease since the early 1960s elucidating not only the complex immunobiological responses and mechanisms but also the genetic basis for the complex multifactorial disease.

Description
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), is a chronic, inflammatory, autoimmune disease of unknown origin. There is strong evidence supporting the role of genetics in determining susceptibility and resistance to the disease. NZBWF1/J develop an autoimmune disease resembling human systemic lupus erythematosus. Autoimmunity is characterized by high levels of antinuclear antibodies, hemolytic anemia, proteinuria, and progressive immune complex glomerulonephritis. The incidence and severity of symptoms is more pronounced in females. The average lifespan for NZBWF1 is 245 days for females and 406 days for males. NZBWF1/J mice have been used as a model for autoimmune disease since the early 1960s elucidating not only the complex immunobiological responses and mechanisms but also the genetic basis for the complex multifactorial disease.

Development
These mice are a hybrid cross between NZB/BlNJ (000684) Female x NZW/LacJ (001058) Male .

The Jackson Laboratory's Genotype Promise

The Jackson Laboratory has rigorous genetic quality control and mutant gene genotyping programs to ensure the genetic background of JAX® Mice strains as well as the genotypes of strains with identified molecular mutations. JAX® Mice strains are only made available to researchers after meeting our standards. However, the phenotype of each strain may not be fully characterized and/or captured in the strain data sheets. Therefore, we cannot guarantee a strain's phenotype will meet all expectations. To ensure that JAX® Mice will meet the needs of individual research projects or when requesting a strain that is new to your research, we suggest ordering and performing tests on a small number of mice to determine suitability for your particular project.
